Theory to Practice of the What, Why, How:
Let’s consider the case of Emma, a mid-level manager struggling with task initiation and anxiety. According to Emma, she often feels foggy and unable to start her work, leading to overdue projects and rising levels of stress.
Identifying the What
With her coach, Emma identified that her primary challenge is task initiation. At first glance, Emma believed the root of her procrastination was lack of motivation. However, digging deeper with her coach, they learned that Emma often freezes when confronted with the volume of tasks she needs to complete as they feel overwhelming and ambiguous, and she doesn’t know how to get started.
Exploring the Why
Emma now understood what was causing her friction at work but wasn’t exactly sure why it was happening. Upon a discussion regarding her feelings and organizational strategies, Emma disclosed her anxiety levels spiked when starting new projects, along with challenges related to understanding what to prioritize. This culminated in feelings of being overwhelmed, and letting timelines slip by. Here, the ‘why’ indicates that Emma's struggles revolve around anxiety and a lack of clarity, or ambiguity from her leadership about her priorities.
Implementing the How
To help Emma, her and her coach delved deeply into the what and why, to arrive at the how: how are they going to deploy customized strategies to remove the barriers she’s experiencing and get the results she wants. Here’s how:
Mindset Strategies: Emma’s coach introduced her to mindfulness exercises that can help her better control her anxiety. They also worked to effectively build the habit so that Emma could rely on this strategy and see her growth over an extended period of time.
Prioritization Framework: Emma and her coach looked at the typical work tasks that come across Emma’s desk and developed a task tracking system. This system was integrated into Emma’s day to day and created a visual task board that categorizes tasks by urgency and importance.
Incremental Goals: Emma learned how to break larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps, allowing her to build confidence gradually and overcome her overwhelm.
After several weeks, Emma notices a significant improvement in her ability to initiate tasks and manage her workload. She reports feeling more in control and less anxious about her daily responsibilities by using what, why, how methodology.
