Common Challenges among Neurodiverse Professionals & Employees with Disabilities

Neurodiverse employees can face complex, multi-faceted challenges in daily life--especially at work. Not surprisingly, neurodiverse individuals are more likely to report a poor employee experience than their neurotypical colleagues, often because their team lacks inclusive practices. This lack of inclusive practices can result in a challenging workload and increased stress levels that impacts the whole team.

At the same time, employees managing a new or chronic health condition may struggle to balance their demanding jobs while still prioritizing their physical or mental health. This is a recipe for burnout and turnover--all of which can be avoided with individualized, one-to-one coaching.

The How Skills’ Workplace Coaching program help professionals with disabilities learn effective, evidence-based strategies to reduce barriers related to a medical condition at work. Here are a few examples of clients we’ve helped:

  • An engineer with ADHD and depression who struggled with staying focused in a remote working environment.

  • A recruiter with chronic pain who experienced fatigue and exacerbated medical symptoms from trying to keep up a fast pace at work.

  • A project manager with a traumatic brain injury who needed to learn new ways of managing a large amount of detailed information.

  • A software developer with a learning disability and dyslexia who needed to obtain a certification to move into a new role.

  • A consultant with autism had difficulty retaining information when they became overwhelmed in meetings.
