Dealing with Change: Structures and Strategies

We are all dealing with difficult life changes during this time with COVID-19. Here are some strategies to help you and your family.

Structure and consistency. Life for all of us just took a dramatic shift – a shift that most of us weren’t expecting and didn’t have time to prepare for. In this time of chaos and uncertainty, we need intentional routines. Here are some strategies that work well for many people:

Working and Learning from Home

  • Structure time: Create a daily schedule that includes consistent start and stop times, breaks, and what you want to accomplish. Consider having a brief daily accountability meeting with a colleague for work or your child for their learning.

  • Structure space. Work from home, but not from your bed. Pick a workspace away from distractions, and set it up just like you would at work or school.

  • Online learning. Some of our schools are transitioning to online school, while others are completely shut down for the time being. Either way, learning should continue, and we can help.

Keeping Ourselves and our Families Balanced

  • Establish/continue your morning and night routines. Get in and out of bed at consistent times and even if you don’t leave your house, get ready for the day. Don’t forget to “leave work” and wind down in the evening.

  • Community. In this time of isolation, we need to stay connected with our people. Schedule a weekly FaceTime with a couple friends, start an ongoing group text chain, or “have dinner” with a family member over video chat.

  • Self care. As things change, we may need to get a little crafty with our self-care. Try an online exercise class, play a game with your family, find five minutes a day to meditate, or enjoy a cup of tea.

We are here to help coach you through this transition.
